Michael and Gary Chaplin are cousins, both were born in Ferryhill. Michael’s father, Sid Chaplin, established himself as an author and screenwriter after his early experiences working as a miner in the Durham coalfield. Much of Sid’s work reflects working class life during pivotal moments of the last century. Michael, initially a journalist, made the leap to television and was responsible for myriad productions including “Monarch of the Glen”. More recently Michael has put Ferryhill on the map with his BBC Radio 4 series “The Ferryhill Philosophers”. Gary Chaplin was a founder member (and songwriter)of the band Penetration, which scored some early success, landing a recording contract with Virgin Records. Having left punk rock behind he now concentrates on other musical ventures. As The Bird Scarers, Michael and Gary will take you on a journey of discovery through the Chaplin family album.
